How to Paint your Wall Evenly

Instructions
  1. Surface Preparation

    • 1
Carefully place a continuous line of masking tape along any window frames and ceiling surfaces that adjoin the wall(s) you plan to paint.
    • 2
Using the small screwdriver, remove any wall socket plates and store carefully with screws. Prevent losing the small screws by using a piece of masking tape to tape the screws to the plate.

    • 3
If the wall was previously painted with high-gloss paint, use sandpaper to roughen the entire wall surface to allow the new coat of paint to stick to the wall.
    • 4
Take a slightly damp cloth and wipe down the wall to remove any remaining dust.

    Paint Preparation

    • 5
Open the can of paint and, using the stir stick, gently stir the paint until the pigment is entirely blended with the oil or acrylic liquid.
    • 6
Carefully pour the paint into the paint pan until the paint just fills the reservoir end.
    • 7
Place the roller flatly onto the top of the paint. Do not dunk the roller. Use the flat end of the paint pan and roll the roller to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. If necessary, repeat the above procedure until you have a thin, even layer of paint on the roller.

    Painting the wall

    • 8
Paint the wall from the top to the bottom so that any drips can be painted into the lower part of the wall.
    • 9

      Imagined lines

Imagine the wall divided into 2-foot by 2-foot sections. Start with one of the upper sections.
    • 10

      Step 1

Apply the paint in an 'A' pattern. Roll upward from the lower bottom corner up to the center top.
    • 11

      Step 2

Roll downward from the center to the lower-right corner.
    • 12

      Step 3

Roll upward from the lower-left corner toward the upper-right corner.
    • 13
Roll paint first in up and down strokes, then left and right strokes, filling in your 2-foot by 2-foot square evenly with paint.
    • 14
Repeat these steps for each 2-foot by 2-foot section of the wall.
