Design a Baby Nursery

Decorating a baby nursery (also known as a baby's room or bedroom) can be a somewhat daunting prospect, especially if this is your first child. There are so many decisions to make, but so little time. Don't stress - baby nursery design can be fun, if you take it one step at a time.

Repair Cracked Walls

How do cracks in walls develop?

cracked_wallCracks in walls are the result of movement beyond that which can be accommodated by the masonry construction materials. A wall tends to crack where masonry is over-stressed and least restrained, such as at window and door openings or at corners.  Stress and movement is usually caused by variations in moisture content in the walls, or in the ground that supports them, temperature variations or chemical reactions. Some movements are cyclic and reversible, many are permanent.
Cracks in walls can be divided into three categories:
  • active - cracks in masonry that are increasing in width and/or length
  • passive - cracks in walls that are not increasing in width or length and
  • cyclic - cracks in brickwork that open and close seasonally.

How To Lay Ceramic Tile

The first thing you will need to lay tile is...
The right tools:
  1. Tape measure, square and caulk line. Hammer, tile nippers, level, and a pry bar.
  2. Wet tile saw and or 4 inch die grinder with dry cut diamond blade.
  3. 1/4 inch notched trowel (1/2 inch trowel is recommended for 16x16 or larger tile/stone).
  4. Safety goggles, power cords and any other safety equipment. Don't forget protection for your hands especially when grouting-latex gloves work great!
  5. Rubber grout float, buckets and sponges.
Material List
  1. Cement backer board.
  2. Glue for cement board as wells as galvanized 2 inch roofing nails or backer board screws.
  3. Modified thinset mortar, spacers and grout.
  4. Choose yourself a good tile. Ceramic, porcelain or a natural stone. Note: Buy a good quality tile. Stay away from the red based clay tile. The finish isn't as good and they may break easier. You usually pay for what you get. You can never go wrong with a porcelain tile, although they will be more difficult to cut.
